The Impact of the Recipe Club

recipe club

In 2025, we at Urban Recipe distributed almost 700,000 pounds of food through our programs. Every pound of meat, fresh produce, and pantry staples went to families at no cost to them. This is only possible thanks to our incredible partners and donors.

Last month, we kicked off our 35th Anniversary celebration – celebrating a Recipe 35 years in the making. Our founder, Rev. Chad Hale and our Executive Director Jeremy Lewis sat down to a discussion about our robust history and vision for the future. If you haven’t seen the first video of their discussion, check it out now:

Discussing the humble roots where Urban Recipe began in a church basement in Grant Park, and projecting our dreams for growing co-ops through our Cooperative Pathway Program, one thing remained constant: the need to provide for the families in front of us.

This constant goal of serving families while recognizing their inherent dignity has formed Urban Recipe and is the reason we are different from other food pantries. Our unique food co-op model is community-focused and consistent. We pride ourselves in being a source of food that families can rely on. And that’s only possible thanks to our donors.

The Recipe Club

Our Recipe Club is our name for our recurring donors – folks committed to giving any amount, but on a consistent basis. Regardless of the size of their recurring donation, our Recipe Club members allow us to plan and better utilize all of our resources. These consistent contributions fuel our mission of promoting food security, ensuring families experience not just access to food, but stability and community month after month.

A few stabilities our Recipe Club supports:

  • Bi-weekly co-ops.
    • That means free food for families every two weeks.
  • Fresh produce.
    • Fresh produce prices and access fluctuates throughout the year, but with a regular source of donation from our Recipe Club, we can count on getting fresh fruits and veggies in the hands of our co-op members.
  • Growth through our Cooperative Pathway Program.
    • Growth requires resources, funds, and time – all things that are in short supply with nonprofits. Because of our Recipe Club, we can take steps to support the future of our Food Co-ops.
